HIPAA
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) is the federal law that established standards for the privacy and security of health information, and for the electronic data exchange of health information.
The main goals of HIPAA are to make health insurance more portable when persons change employers and to make the health care system more accountable for costs -- trying especially to reduce waste and fraud.
HIPAA aims to promote efficiency through the better use of information technology. Broad use of computer systems have increased concerns about misuse of patient's health information. Because of this, privacy and security provisions are part of HIPAA.
